The story of FYE chain
The first FYE store opened in 1993 at the Trumbull Mall in Trumbull, Connecticut. A second location was established in 1995 at Eastview Mall in Victor, New York, and a third store was built at Colonie Center in Colonie, New York, in 1997. Both these stores had great success among customers because of the variety of merchandise and the knowledgeable staff. The key point was the focus on customer service and providing a fun shopping experience.
After acquiring Camelot Music in 2001, Trans World combined the other mall-based businesses under the “f.y.e.” name. In that year, a major re-branding effort renamed f.y.e. as the brand for all of Trans World Entertainment’s mall-based retail shops as well as many stand-alone locations, although some stand-alone or strip mall shops kept using regional names like Planet Music.
Trans World began converting old Coconut shops and Media Play outlets near Salt Lake City, Utah, and Buffalo, New York into FYE superstores in 2006. In 2009, FYE closed over 100 stores, bringing the total to 52 since 2012.
