History of the brand
Max Spencer Adler, the founder of Spencer Gifts, began his career in 1947 in Easton as a mail-order catalog that sold a variety of unusual goods. The first Spencer’s store opened in 1963 in Cherry Hill Mall in Cherry Hill, New Jersey. The company went public in 1965 and became a leading retailer of novelty items and gag gifts.
Its popularity grew up when Spencer Gifts expanded to malls throughout the United States in the late 1960s and 1970s. Max Adler retired as CEO in 1979 but remained Chairman of the Board until his death in 1993.
Spencer Gifts was acquired by Barnes & Noble in 1971, but the brand was spun off as a separate company in 1992. Spencer Gifts shut down its mail-order catalog division in 1990 because it was losing money. In 1999, Spencer Gifts was acquired by The Great American Group LLC in a bankruptcy auction for $174 million.
DAPY and GLOW! trademarks were purchased in 1997 and 1998 respectively, and after this purchase, Spencer’s is known as the largest novelty retailer.
Spencer’s opened its first international store in the Middle East in 2001 at Dubai Festival City Mall, UAE. After 3 years they began redesigning the stores to make them unique and more themed. In 2008, Spencer Gifts LLC acquired Morris Costumes from Dave’s Costume Shop in McMinnville, Tennessee.
