The brief history of Smokey restaurants
The first Smokey Bones restaurant was opened in Orlando, Florida, in August 1999, at the site formerly occupied by Red Lobster and near Darden’s headquarters. It was the first chain of restaurants in the United States to focus on barbecue. The restaurant was designed to have a rustic lodge feel, with two fireplaces and a large patio.
Around June 2001, Darden opened eight additional Smokey Bones BBQ Sports Bar restaurants in Florida, the Midwest, and the Northeast. All of the restaurants were company-owned. On May 5, 2007, Darden Restaurants announced that it would be closing 56 Smokey Bones restaurants and selling the remaining 73. This was a result of Darden’s focus on its more profitable chains such as Olive Garden and Red Lobster.
After this step, the chain was acquired by Sun Capital Partners in March 2008. In September 2009, the company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. The closings took place in 22 states, concentrated in the southwest and the north-central United States.
