The history of this classical brand
In 1866 Charles Bank opened a clothing shop for men and his grandson Joseph Bank worked there as a salesman since he was 11 y.o. Joseph worked in this shop until he was 21 y.o., and the most surprising thing is that he had no idea about his future trade at that time, but after a while, it became clear that Joseph’s feet were made to stand on the pedestal of greatness.

In 1940 Joseph A. Bank moved into a larger building in Baltimore, where they manufactured men’s suits and other clothes. Five years later Joseph and his son Howard bought out the whole Hartz interest and created their own new company under the name JoS A. Bank and Co. In 1953 they cut out the “JoS A. Bank and Co.” from their label, so it became just Jos. A. Bank Clothiers Inc., which explains the whole story.
Quaker Oats Company invested in Jos. A. Bank in 1981 and purchased it from the family. By 1985 they already had 25 stores in seven states. Quaker sold the company to an internal management group in 1987 but had retained 5% of its stock holdings.
