The history behind Caribou Coffee
In 1992, John Puckett was a traveling salesman for another company, and he was looking to start his own business. He started pitching the idea of Caribou Coffee to anyone who would listen – and eventually it caught on.
John Puckett opened the first Caribou Coffee location with his wife, Jana, in December 1992. By February 1993, there were three locations and by June 1993 they had 11 locations throughout Minnesota and Wisconsin.
The name Caribou Coffee came from John’s high school nickname: Caribou. His high school had a yearly tradition of nominating seniors as Caribous – those who carried the spirit of their fellow students through their four years of high school. The ‘cariboo’ movement was introduced as an effort keep positive peer pressure alive during his senior year.
In 1998, Caribou Coffee merged with a Minneapolis-based coffee roaster named Hammerhead Enterprises.
In 2005 NASDAQ listed them under ticker symbol CBOU. Already in December 2012 Caribou Coffee had more than 400 locations. In April 2013 it was announced that Caribou Coffee had merged with the coffeehouse company of Bruegger’s Enterprises, Inc.
Caribou Coffee had teamed up with an expert roaster who uses only hand-picked beans harvested from regions known for growing the highest quality beans on the planet. These expertly roasted beans are fresh-packed within hours of being roasted for peak flavor and delivered to stores daily so they’re guaranteed to be as fresh as can be, whenever you bring them home. They take great care in choosing our coffee because we believe that how it is grown, cultivated, processed and shipped directly affects its quality.
