History
Dress Barn was started by Elliot Jaffe in Stamford, Connecticut in 1962. Jaffe had been working at Macy’s Department Store as a merchandising manager when he had an idea of opening a women’s discounted apparel store. He told his wife about it and soon after, the two decided to open a test store.
Having in mind that they both needed money to support their children, Jaffe and Roslyn planned for the store after-hours. Their first store was marred with several challenges such as the lack of dressing rooms, lack of convenient parking, and a flight of stairs that customers had to use to access it.
However, it was an immediate success. Jaffe would soon leave his job to give the store his full attention. Roslyn was already working on opening a second and by 1963, the two had their second branch. Growth continued over the years and in the same year, the business was incorporated as Dress Bran, Inc.
Jaffe made sure that it did not grow too quickly to deplete the available capital or sink all resources towards expansion plans. Stores were added according to the company’s growth in earnings. By 1970, Dress Barn ran 20 store units.
It was now large enough to offer items from designer brands such as Calvin Klein, Jones New York, and Liz Claiborne. Clothes and apparel were sold to career women at prices 20 to 50 percent lower than what normal department stores offered. Growth also took place through the acquisition of other stores such as Off the Rax, The Gap, and Pants Corral.
By end of 1984, Dress Barn had 157 stores. By 1987, the number had grown to 307. The store then introduced Dress Barn Woman in 1989 which was a brand that specifically catered for plus-sized women.
Dress Barn introduced casualwear at the beginning of the 21st Century. This caused an increase in sales by up to 3 percent in the mid to late 90s. In May 2019, the company announced that it would close its stores. Its website was sold off to Tai Lopez and his business partner Alex Mehr who currently run the store as an e-commerce-only business.
