History
Stein Mart was founded by Sam Stein in 1908. Stein opened the first store in Greenville, Mississippi. He sold general merchandise at first. This later changed in 1932 when his son, Jake Stein, took over the company upon his father’s death.
Jake Stein narrowed down to offering discounted clothing. The store targeted shoppers that visited department stores regularly. Stein Mart would induce such customers into buying by offering discounts of between 25% and 60%.
The store grew to become a leading clothing retailer in the Mississippi Delta by the late 1970s. When Jay Stein took over the company, he grew the number of stores from a mere 3 in 1977 to 40 in 1990. By 1996, Stein Mart had 123 stores.
The company used demographic data regarding levels of education, occupations, and average household incomes to determine the location of its stores. It mainly targeted populations of about 125,000 or more. This helped to predict how the store would perform in a given area.
Jay Stein stepped down in 2002. He remained chairman and the largest shareholder. He was succeeded by John H. Williams Jr. who took over the position of vice chairman and chief executive officer. He served from September 2001 to February 2003.
Michael D. Fisher became the president and chief executive officer in 2003 and resigned in 2007. Linda McFarland Farthing succeeded Fisher. She held the position for one year. David H. Stovall Jr. took over after her in 2008 and served until 2011. Jay Stein then took over as interim CEO.
Jay Stein was replaced by Dawn Robertson in 2016. Stein Mart announced MaryAnne Morin as the new President later in 2017. The company experienced a downward trend in its stock price sometime later. It announced that it would be cutting its inventory by 15%, corporate staff by 10% and reducing expenses by $22 million.
In February 2020, Stein Mart entered a deal to privatize the company and to take its common stock off any public stock market.
