The story behind Deseret Book
The Deseret Book Company was formed in 1919 through the consolidation of the Deseret News Bookstore and the Deseret Sunday School Union Bookstore. Both of these Utah bookstores have connections to George Q. Cannon, a Latter-day Saint general Authority who founded both stores. The term “Deseret,” which means “honeybee” in the Bible, comes from this verse.
In 1866 the first Sunday School Union Bookstore was opened in Salt Lake City. The Deseret News Bookstore, which later became Deseret Book Company, was founded four years later in 1870 by George Q. Cannon. The two bookstores competed with each other until 1919 when they finally merged to form the Deseret Book Company we know today.
Cannon’s company had a long history of collaboration with the LDS Church-owned newspaper, the Deseret News. Cannon’s five sons worked for the paper in senior positions, and he himself was editor from 1867 to 1872 and again between 1892 and 1898 when he temporarily owned it. In 1925, after the death of George Q. Cannon, the Church purchased the Deseret News and Deseret Book Company became its publishing arm.
By the end of 1920, both antecedent bookstores had closed, and a single new Deseret Book Company building was erected in downtown Salt Lake City on the site of the former ZCMI Center Mall. It meant that from then on, the Deseret News would be printed and bound in the same building as its own bookstore.
In 1940, Deseret Book Company ceased printing the newspaper to focus exclusively on its bookstore operations; today it is Utah’s largest and oldest continually operating bookstore. It is also a major publisher of Latter-day Saint literature and sells items through its website, deseretbook.com, and through its chain of retail stores throughout the Western United States.
The Deseret Book “Censorship Committee on Films” was formed in 1946 as film distribution and rental business because ordinary workers were unable to review all of the films it handled. By 1950, there were 18 members on the committee which meant that it could not keep up with the demand. In 1953, the Church Film Library was created which is now known as the LDS Motion Picture Archive.
The Deseret Book Company plays an important role in the funding and distribution of Latter-day Saint films. It has helped to finance and distribute films such as Legacy (1992), Testaments (1999), The Work and the Glory (2000), Saints and Soldiers (2003), 17 Miracles (2011), and The Cokeville Miracle (2015). It has also distributed films made by other production companies, such as Orson Scott Card’s Ender’s Game (2013) and Richard Dutcher’s God’s Army (2000).
In the 1970s the locations of several of the company’s stores were changed and many new ones were opened. In 1971 the first store outside of Utah was opened in Idaho Falls, Idaho and by 1972 there were stores in Ogden, Layton, Sandy, and Orem. In 1974 a store was opened in St. George, Utah. By 1975 there were stores in Mesa, Arizona, and Ontario, California.
After the 1990s, the company started to open stores in larger cities such as Salt Lake City, Denver, Seattle, and Portland. In 1993 a store was opened in Albuquerque, New Mexico and in 1994 a store was opened in Las Vegas, Nevada. In 1996 a store was opened in Reno, Nevada. In 1997 a store was opened in Boise, Idaho.
