How did Family Christian Stores get started?
Family Christian Stores was established by two brothers Pat and Bernie Taylor in 1931 in Anderson, Indiana with only $300 start-up money at 31 North Main Street. The first named the business “The Christian Shop” but later changed it to Family Bookstores.
Family Christian Stores started as a small-town bookstore with a very simple motto, “Sell the Best and Help People Grow Spiritually.” They have since then grown into one of America’s largest retailers of Christian products. Family Christian Stores are known for “helping people grow spiritually.”
At first, the company was a part of Zondervan Corp. The latter was founded in 1931 by Herman C. Wenger, the president of Davison-Paxon-Merriam Co., a printing company in Michigan. They published and distributed Bibles and books through its Zondervan Publishing House.
In 1989 they already opened the 102nd store. Family Christian Stores were really successful for a bookstore. They were doing great until 2014 when they suddenly filed for bankruptcy.
In 1999 this chain of stores was bought out by a private equity company, that also bought out Lifeway Christian Resources in 2007. Family Christian Stores is now a subsidiary of the former.
In 2013, EB5 Global Holdings bought the rights to use and franchise Family Christian Stores. In 2015, FCS went bankrupt and closed down for good. But they are open again! This time you can find their products online, not in local stores anymore.
