The history of Curacao
In 1978, the California-based company began as a consumer-product door-to-door sales business in Burbank. Such a ‘door-to-door’ concept was popular in those days because it was a new way of doing business and it allowed people to shop in the comfort of their own homes. The company name was derived from the famous island off the coast of Venezuela.
La Curacao started in 1983 in the Pico-Union district of Los Angeles. In 1984, it opened its export division which let customers buy items and have them transported to their relatives living in Mexico or Central America. Such expansion was made available because the company partnered up with Federated Department Stores, Inc. which allowed La Curacao access to its vendors. This made La Curacao the first Latino company to be affiliated with a major US retailer.
The original store was burned to the ground and all inventory was lost during the 1992 Los Angeles Riots, but only two weeks later it reopened at its now-iconic location on 1605 W. Olympic Blvd. In 1995, La Curacao opened a second store in Panorama City’s San Fernando Valley that featured Mesoamerican decor and child care services within the Panorama Mall.
After 1995, the company began to rapidly expand. New locations were opened in Santa Ana, Anaheim, Huntington Park, and Long Beach. By the year 2000, La Curacao had seven stores in operation.
In 2002, La Curacao acquired El Palacio de las Golondrinas, a 150-year-old landmark building in downtown Los Angeles.
