General info about Albertsons store

This grocery store opened in Boise, Idaho in 1939 as the first self-service grocery store in the city. The founder, Joe Albertson was a partner with an employee of his and began by investing $300 and opening two stores.

His original vision was to make life easier for families: “We’ve moved away from canned goods and sliced meat over the counter and we carry only quality products today,” said Don Smith, senior vice president for communications at Albertsons.

They offer a wide selection of groceries, produce, meat, and seafood as well as a pharmacy and an in-store bank.

Albertsons is the second-largest supermarket chain in the United States. In 2006 they merged their 2 companies together by acquiring an American store, SuperValu Inc., creating a new business known as Albertsons LLC. They have 1,081 or more locations throughout the United States and offer a variety of services to make shopping easier for customers including curbside pickup, online shopping, and grocery delivery.

History under the brand name

In 1939 a man by name of Joe Albertson opened a grocery store in Boise, Idaho. This grocery store was very small and had a short name, “Idaho’s Cash Store”. In 1954 the company went public on the American Stock Exchange.

In 1966 Albertsons opened its first stores in Arizona under its new name, “Albertsons Market”. At this time they also began their expansion into southern California. Joe Albertson’s ownership of his own company ended in 1969 when he sold it to a group of investors led by Sol Price.

Price retired from day-to-day operations in 1972, though he remained as chairman until 1979. In 1977 an outside organization bought controlling interest from Sol Price and several members of his management team that had been with him since the 1940s. This investment group included New York-based Hambrecht & Quist.

The first store branded as “Albertsons” opened in 1983 in Arizona, just four years after the Albertson’s chain was created. The company chose to refocus its efforts on that brand name, discontinuing the “Marketbytes” convenience stores and traditional “Albertson’s” grocery stores. Instead, they chose to expand the new Albertsons chain. This would be an increase of roughly 65% for the company with a focus on one single brand instead of many different ones.

In March 1989, Albertsons` family opened the 500th store, located in Pleasanton, California. Four months later, the company’s 1,000th store opened in Idaho Falls, Idaho. By 1993 Albertsons expanded into Tennessee and northern California. In 1994 Albertsons celebrated its 25th anniversary by ringing the NYSE closing bell with members of the Cox family and former Chairman and CEO Sol Price.

In 1995, Albertsons Inc. purchased American Stores (formerly Sterlings). The same year, Albertsons attempted a hostile take over of Longs Drug Stores but failed when Kroger took over American Stores instead.

Restructuring in 2001

In 2001, Albertsons Inc. became a wholly-owned subsidiary of the new Albertsons Inc., although all company stores still had “Albertsons” as part of their name. The new CEO Larry Johnston outlined a plan to help the company grow through the acquisition of other companies.

The first of these acquisitions was American Stores owned Acme Markets, Shaw’s, and Star Market which Albertsons would own a majority share of. The next year two major acquisitions were completed:

European interest in Albertsons throughout its history has been expressed by Argyll Foods, Fleming-Wyat Hotels, Wm Morrison Supermarkets, Unicopa which is now part of Germany`s Rewe Group, and J Sainsbury plc.

In 2003, Idaho grocery chain Pay ‘n Save Corp.’s 133 stores were purchased by Albertsons Inc. This sale brought the total number of stores to over 2,100.

In 2004, all working together Albertsons acquired ACME Markets, America’s oldest food retailer. On May 8, 2005, SuperValu announced that it had agreed to sell its Shaw’s/Star Market division to Albertsons Inc., for about $2.65 billion in cash and stock. This purchase brought the total number of stores to 2,414 with 1,878 pharmacies within those stores.

In 2006, Albertsons, Inc., announced that it had completed the purchase of 26 Food4Less stores in Northern California and Nevada from Fleming Foods.

Albertsons Market stores were re-branded as Alvista in 2007.

In 2008, many different acquisitions closed. This included all of Schnucks locations in Missouri and Illinois. The total number of acquired stores was 74 bringing the total to 2,637 (1,977 pharmacies). Also this year SuperValu sold its Minnesota and Wisconsin grocery stores to Roundy’s; these were former Copps and Pick `n Save supermarkets.

In early 2009,(March) an acquisition took place when ACME acquired Pennsylvania-based Genuardi’s Family Markets which operated supermarkets in Pennsylvania and New Jersey under Genuardi’s banner.

The end of 2009 was a big year for Albertsons, the acquisition of some stores from The Kroger Co ( Ralphs and Food 4 Less). These California locations were some of the most profitable ones owned by Albertsons and they added to their geographical reach on this purchase.

This brought the total number of acquired stores to some 142 altogether with 68 pharmacies inside them bringing the total number of pharmacies within Albertsons stores up to 2,971. In August 2011,(August) there was a news release that stated that SuperValu Inc would sell its Minnesota and Wisconsin grocery store chains to Roundy’s Inc., including former Pick n’ Save and Copps stores in Wisconsin, but not the Pick n’ Save stores in Illinois.

Does Kroger own Albertsons?

Kroger and Albertsons are in fact competitors. Though they both operate chains of grocery stores, Kroger is the larger company and has a wider reach.

It’s no secret that the grocery industry is competitive. For years, Kroger and Albertsons have been competing for market share. In recent months, there have been talks of a merger between the two companies, but nothing has been finalized yet.

So far, it doesn’t look like the proposed merger will go through. If it does happen, it will be interesting to see how the two companies compete against each other post-merger. Will Kroger be able to maintain its lead? Or will Albertsons overtake it? Only time will tell.

Albertsons grocery store brands

Albertsons once had several different store brands, but they are all now under one roof. Some of these include Jewel-Osco products like jewelry and grocery while others were unique to certain locations such as A+, Good Day or Village Market pharmacy prices in addition to Janet Lee whose name means Vice President’s daughter after working for Albertsons during his time there

Some consolidation occurred within the pharmaceutical section where Equaline became its own brand rather than having both Savon Osco (for beauty aids/health).

There are also a lot of other brands. Here are some of them:

  • O Organics: USDA certified organic products
  • ASDA Smart Price: cheaper items for lower-income families
  • Budget Gourmet: food court, lunch bar, and Mexican restaurant brand (the name is spelled wrong) then used by Haggen stores in Washington State after they bought them out.
  • Open Nature: more natural items that are not USDA certified organic.
  • SignatureCare: it is the home and wellness brand for everyday living.
  • Signature Farms: creates fresh produce that’s delicious, nutritious, natural – just how it should be!
  • Signatue Reserve: these are all dishes destined to become signature favorites among family members who love the great taste as much we do
