White Castle was first established in Wichita, Kansas on September 13, 1921, by Walter Anderson and Billy Ingram. Anderson had operated food stands in Wichita before. After running three locations, he partnered with Ingram to open a fourth.
They had $700 on them which they used to establish White Castle. Together, they turned the establishment into a chain of restaurants and marketed the brand into what it is today. Back then, the general public was not open to eating ground beef.
This was due to a novel that was published in 1906 highlighting the lack of proper sanitation in the meatpacking industry. Anderson and Ingram set out to change this perception. Their outlets comprised stainless steel interiors and employees who wore spotless outfits. This helped to invoke a perception of cleanliness among the people.
The success that both Anderson and Ingram had led to a lot of imitators. Restaurants mimicked the unique architecture that White Castle used in its buildings. Some played around with the name “White Castle” by replacing the word “White” with other colors or “Castle” with a word of their own.
