History

AC Moore was established in 1985 by William Kaplan and John E. Parker. Kaplan was already in the manufacturing business where he produced women’s handbags. Parker was a veteran at merchandising and had worked as an executive at F.W. Woolworth.

By 1993, the company had 12 stores which grew to 16 by 1994. To position itself for future growth, a new store was opened in 1996 together with a 140,000 square-foot building that was leased for distribution purposes. An electronic link was also developed to connect the company to most vendors.

AC Moore also added many experienced retail executives in their finance, merchandising, and operations departments. By 1997, it had added 8 more stores to its portfolio. 12 additional stores were added in 1998 after clearing all the company debt and realizing great profits.

At the peak of its success, a typical store was offering approximately 65,000 stock-keeping units per year and 45,000 of such at any given time. Categories of products included floral-and-accessory, traditional crafts, art supplies and frame categories, fashion crafts, and seasonal items that could be used during special occasions such as Valentine’s and Christmas.

Sales grew to $598 million by 2006. Unfortunately, the numbers started to decline in the following years. The company was then acquired for $41 million by Sbar’s – a distributor of art suppliers based in Moorestown. AC Moore announced on November 25, 2019 that it would be closing all its 145 locations.

Key Facts

While AC Moore may be closing all of its retail operations, up to 40 stores could remain open under The Michaels Companies, Inc. AC Moore attributed the closure to the difficulties that have been facing most retailers in the current environment. This has made it difficult for the company to compete and operate at a national level.

Conclusion

Despite its closure, AC Moore will still be able to provide the best crafts under the Michaels name. Customers will still be able to find a large selection of items such as kid’s crafts, baking crafts, candy crafts, and so much more at the remaining stores.
