What is the history of the Sunvalley Shopping Center foundation?
In 1967 Alfred Taubman of A.T. Shopping Centers, Inc bought the property on which Sunvalley Shopping Center now stands. In 1968 Taubman turned to architect Frank Gehry to design what would become one of the first malls in the country with a modernist architectural design. The completed mall opened its doors to shoppers in 1976 and has been serving the community ever since.
In 1981, a fourth anchor tenant was established: a three-story Emporium Capwell that served as The Emporium from 1990 to 1995 until the department store was sold to Federated Department Stores; this location subsequently became a Macy’s Men’s/Home/Cellar/Backstage, lowering the number of distinct anchor tenants in the mall to three.
A twin-engine light plane missed its initial approach at Buchanan Field on December 23, 1985, and crashed into the mall.
