Price Choppers is a brand of grocery stores based in Schenectady, New York. The company is a brand and franchise affiliated with the Golub Corporation, which operates over 100 Price Chopper locations throughout New England and the Mid-Atlantic States.
In 2015, Price Choppers were listed as being in the top 10% of grocery stores among U.S. chains. They are known for their low prices and special offers. A logo is a man in a yellow suit, red bowtie, and white hat.
The brand name means “to chop prices,” a reference to a phrase used in the 1950s by the parent company Market Basket. It was created by Don Smith, an advertising executive with the firm Young & Rubicam. The idea was to convey that Chopper stores offered bargains on basic items.
This grocery store offers many types of items. They sell fresh produce, meat, seafood, bakery items, dairy products, frozen foods, health and beauty aids. Their stores provide services including catering for business lunches or dinner parties at home. They also offer their own Price Chopper brand of foodstuffs in some locations.

History of Price Chopper
In 1927 William and Bernard Golub took over the grocery store from their father, who opened it in 1908. The brothers moved the store to Schenectady, New York. In 1929 they renamed it Price Chopper, in an effort to convey their promise of “low prices always.”
In 1981 Price Chopper merged with Market Basket, another chain which the Golubs had long admired for its customer service and community involvement. After two years of collaboration between Price Choppers and Market Basket stores, all locations were rebranded to use both names.
The company attempted to expand into Massachusetts in 1996 but was not successful. It decided it would have better success by buying out other grocery stores instead of attempting to build new ones from scratch. They purchased six former Hanover Food Mart locations in 1997 and 13 former Tops Friendly Markets in 1999.
In 2007, Price Chopper partnered with the YMCA of Greater Springfield to establish a gasoline reward program for customers shopping at their local store. During this time, Price Choppers also opened 10 new stores and renovated 18 existing locations.
In 2008, as part of an effort to increase awareness among potential shoppers who were not familiar with the brand, Price Chopper began airing television advertisements featuring comedian Jeff Dunham. The ads aired in all six New England states along with Upstate New York and Western Pennsylvania.
In 2014 they changed the name to Market32 in order to modernize the brand. This was not successful, and in 2016 they changed it back to Price Chopper.
Price Chopper is unique among other grocery stores because they also sell many products under their own name. This includes fresh produce like fruits and vegetables; bakery items such as bread and donuts; meat and seafood; dairy products; frozen foods; and household products like over-the-counter medication, paper products, and laundry soap.

In January 2016, Price Chopper launched a new store concept called Market32 in order to modernize its brand image. It was not successful and in October of that year, they changed it back to its original name Price Chopper.
The company has adopted a policy of “No Middle Man”, meaning that they buy directly from farmers, growers, and manufacturers to eliminate any extra costs or markups that may be present in larger grocery chains.
Stores were originally supplied by Middle Atlantic Products but as the company grew it began buying directly from suppliers such as Dan Andre & Sons Packing Company, Burris Cheese Company, and J. Wiss & Sons.
