What is the story beyond the Earth Fare?

In 1975 Roger Derrough and two friends opened a small natural foods store with the mission of helping people live healthier lives. They called this business Earth Fare.

The name was a reflection of the overall mission to provide people with products that are better for the Earth. It was important to them that Earth Fare stay true to this goal, which they did by accepting only natural products in their stores.

In 1994 they got a new business partner and that helped Earth Fare stores to enlarge the variety of products. For example, grocery items and household goods were added to the selection.

Eight years later, in 2002, Earth Fare stores began offering food made by local manufacturers with ingredients grown on nearby farms.

The company was bought out by Oak Hill Capital in 2012. That was a significant achievement in the history of Earth Fare.

The new owners were willing to give the company much needed capital, but also worked hard to keep up with all the changes in consumer taste. They knew that organic food was gaining ground in American culture, so they gave their employees a chance to try out innovative ideas for reaching even more shoppers.

However, in 2020 the organic food stores chain announced that they go out of business due to bankruptcy. Still, they could stay in line and still remain on the market in 2021.

Boot list – what does it mean?

Any buyer at Earth Fare would probably notice the “Boot List” section. Actually, there are multiple sections like this one in each department of the store. What do these items do to get on this list? Why does it get on the list? How can you get around booting these products from your cart?

The Earth Fare stores have a policy where they will not order or carry any products that contain GMOs. They have a 3rd party called “Verified Non-GMO,” which is a service done by OIA Global. The Verified Non-GMO service helps companies avoid using ingredients that have been genetically modified.

In addition to being GMO-free, Earth Fare wants its food sources to be organic and free from all harmful pesticides and herbicides. By not supporting these harmful ingredients, they are also taking a stance against genetically modified organisms.

“If you want to know the truth about your food, start here.” – Earth Fare

So, how does this boot list work? OIA Global scans each company’s products for their presence of GMOs and any other harmful chemicals (pesticides/herbicides). Once the product has been assessed, OIA Global places an accept or reject stamp on it. If accepted, Earth Fare will buy the product at wholesale price because it is verified as non-GMO.

The ingredients pass muster with both parties; if there are no GMOs in the product, then there shouldn’t be any GMOs represented in it. Products that do not pass OIA Global’s inspection, usually because of the presence of one or more GMO ingredients, are placed on the boot list.

Earth Fare also has a policy for non-GMO exotics (exotic meaning anything outside the U.S., like blueberries from Peru). The company will not carry any products that do not contain at least 90% organic content in their product.

The reasoning behind this is that they believe in order to give customers what they pay for (organic), food should be mostly made up of it; if there isn’t enough organic content in the exotic produce then it cannot claim to be “organic” since it doesn’t make up much of its contents.
