History
Dunham’s Sports is one of the biggest sports goods chains in the United States. They started in Waterford, Michigan, just outside Detroit and are now based in Troy, Michigan.
In 1937, the first shop was opened as Dunham’s Bait & Tackle in West Bloomfield, Michigan. It was operated by Ron Dunham at a location on the West Telegraph Road on the Northwest Highway. The original shop was exposed through Newsweek advertising and radio fishing shows. The shop was burned down in 1946 but rebuilt promptly.
In 1953, R.L. Schmalzreid bought the store and moved it to the Northwestern Highway and Orchard Lake Road corner. The chain was acquired in 1985 by American Can Company. The company’s eight shops at the time of the acquisition were located in Metro Detroit, Michigan, Anderson, Indiana and Muncie, Indiana. The company sold Dunham’s in 1989 after merging with Primerica. By 1991, it was based in Waterford, Michigan, and had 49 shops. The current headquarter of Dunham’s Sports is in Troy, MI.
Dunham’s Sports has now become a complete sports equipment for customers in more than 20 countries with 230+ stores. In new and established markets, Dunham’s Sports is still opening new sport shops.

Dunham’s sports moved into Kokomo to replace a former Elder Beerman (Bon-Ton Stores) Department Shop at Markland Mall, and to provide the property with new retail options.
