History of Winn Dixie
Winn Dixie was started by William Milton Davis alongside his four sons Tine Wayne Davis, Milton Austin Davis, James Elsworth Davis and Artemus Darius Davis. William Davis bought the first general store in Burley, Idaho in 1914. He renamed it to Davis Mercantile.
He sold most of his goods on credit. However, the introduction of cash-only stores in the early 1900s hurt his business. The new stores offered larger selections and lower prices. Davis decided to borrow $10,000 from his father and relocated to Miami, Florida in 1925.
He bought the Rockmoor Grocery store and renamed it to Table Supply in 1927. He also added four more stores in the same year. In 1931, he expanded to 33 chains after buying Lively Stores for $10,000. William Davis later died in 1934 and left his sons in charge of the company.
In 1939, the brothers bought 51% of Winn & Lovett which had 73 stores. They bought the remainder in 1944 and merged Lively Stores and Winn & Lovett. Both stores were operated under the name Winn & Lovett. In 1945, the brothers bought Steiden Stores and Margaret Ann Stores in 1949.
More acquisitions were done during subsequent years. In 1955, the brothers acquired Penney Stores, Eden Stores, and Ballentine Stores. The acquisition of the Dixie Home chain marked the first time the Winn-Dixie name was used.
Other stores that were bought include the Ketner-Milner Stores, Hill Stores, King Stores, City Markets Chain, Buddies Supermarket chain, Thriftway Food Drug, and Jitney Jungle. Despite the multiple acquisitions before the year 2000, Winn Dixie has had to close several of its stores due to financial difficulties.
