History

Wet Seal was founded in 1962 as “Lorne’s” by Lorne Huycke in Newport Beach, California. The word “Wet Seal” is the product of Huycke’s commentary on a model looking like a “wet seal” in her bathing suit performing at a fashion show. So, the firm was founded as Wet Seal in 1990.

The course of the company

As a specialist distributor of clothes and accessories goods for women, Wet Seal, Inc., and its subsidiaries operate in the United States. The company owned three retail chains under the names Wet Seal, Arden B, and Blink. Wet Seal stores provided teenage girls with clothes and accessories. Arden B.

Shops also provided separate feminine contemporary fashion collections and accessories until 2015.

Due to increased competition in the teenage apparel market in January 2015, Wet Seal shut down several stores, although they promised their employees that the shops would stay.

Workers replied with signs on the shops’ front windows explaining how the management of Wet Seal conveyed the closures to their employees and coped with getting some compensation. After that, WTSL’s market share price has dropped.

Company Insider and other news outlets announced on 27 January 2017 that Wet Seal suddenly closed all its shops and dismissed all its staff, a part of an American shop closures phenomenon dubbed retail apocalypse.
