History

Visionworks was incorporated in 1988. It was formerly known as Eye Care Centers of America (ECCA). It’s currently one of the largest and fastest growing companies that offer optical services in the United States.

Eye Care Centers of America Inc. runs stores across America under 11 names: EyeMasters, Vision World, Dr. Bizer’s VisionWorld, Doctors’s ValuVision, Stein Optical, Binyon’s, Eye DRx, Hour Eyes, Dr. Bizer’s VisionWorld, Vision World, and Visionworks.

ECCA was founded in 1984 by a group of investors led by Robert Schumacher. It was based in San-Antonio. By 1986, the company had 13 optical department stores under the name EYE PRO Express in Louisiana and Texas.

Earnings from the stores were used to open or acquire additional outlets. By the end of 1986, ECCA had more than 40 stores across California, New Mexico, Texas, and Arizona. The company would later be purchased by Sears, Roebuck & Co. in 1987. Out of 813 departmental stores, the new purchaser already ran 600 optical departments.

By end of 1988, ECCA was one of the largest optical superchains in America. Each of its stores had a frame selection section, a lens grinding lab, examination rooms, and up to 3 doctors working at all times. The company now had about 88 stores nationwide running under the names EyeMasters, Eye Co., 20/20 Eyecare and EyePro Express.

Growth continued throughout the 1990s. The company was then sold to Desai Capital Management. It was then acquired by Thomas H. Lee Co. in 1998. Thomas H. Lee went on to expand its presence as a provider of quality eyewear. It acquired Dr. Bizer’s Vision World, Stein Optical, Eye DRx, and 76 VisionWorld in the following years.

ECCA bought about 10 stores per year between 2000 and 2003. By 2004, it operated about 375 stores in 30 states providing optical products and services under 11 brands. Moulin International Holdings Ltd. and Golden Gate Capital announced their plans in 2004 to acquire ECCA. They seemed quite adapted to maximizing the future growth of the company.
