History

On 6th September, 1886, Dr. John Ellis established the Continuous Oil Refining Company in Binghamton, New York. In 1868, the founder renamed the company to its popularly known name Valvoline, Inc. One year later, the company relocated its headquarters to Brooklyn from New York. The company was then moved to Shadyside area of New Jersey and changed its name to Ellis & Leonard. The tremendous growth of Valvoline oil began in the 1890s when it was associated with winning race cars. In the 20th century, Valvoline became the recommended motor oil for the Ford Model T.

In 1949, Ashland Inc. legally acquired Freedom-Valvoline Company as part of its organization and it took up its operations and growth. By 2016, Valvoline subsidiary constituted about 37% of Ashland’s annual revenue. On 22nd September, 2016, Valvoline completed its Initial public offering at the New York Stock Exchange and on 5th May, 2017, it became an independent company.
