History
Valero was formed in 1978 through a $1.6 billion settlement that was approved unanimously by the Texas Railroad Commission. This was Texas’ natural gas regulatory agency. The approval ended litigation that had been brought against the Coastal States Gas Corporation by its municipal gas customers.
Valero Energy Corporation was formed in 1980 as a successor of the LoVaca Gathering Company. LoVaca was a subsidiary of Coastal States Gas Corporation. In the mid-1980s, Valero acquired a 50% interest in a refinery owned by Saber Energy in Corpus Christi, Texas.
The operation started as a vacuum and crude unit which was located on a piece of land close to the Corpus Christi Ship Channel. Valero would later assemble a refinery of the future here through its subsidiaries. It also added more refineries in 1997 and currently has 15 plants.
The several acquisitions made by Valero allowed it to expand to wholesale markets. Today, it supplies to independently owned wholesalers in the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Mexico, and Ireland.
The company is the world’s largest independent petroleum refiner. It ranks #1 among refiners that do not undertake in oil exploration. It also ranks #32 in the Fortune 500 lists and still operates primarily in its hometown, San Antonio.
Valerio is also the largest producer of renewable fuels in North America. Its joint venture, Diamond Green Diesel, produces renewable diesel fuel from inedible corn oil, used cooking oil, and recycled animal fats.
The company has the highest number of refineries approved as OSHA Voluntary Petroleum Protection Program (VPP) Star Sites. Its commitment to occupational and process safety can be seen in its Excellence Management System. It’s also highly recognized as a top refining and marketing company, alongside other American companies.
