History
The company was launched in 1983 as an operations wing for the Telephone and Data Systems. TDS is a Chicago based Independent Telephone holding company and it is said to control over 81% of the US Cellular Corporation to date.
TDS was launched in 1968 by Leroy T. Carson of Chicago. The company was mainly interested in telephone technology and controlled over 50 independent rural telephone conglomerates. As of 1982, TDS had a massive investment in cable television services with over 16 similar cable companies. At the time, many companies feared to advance a telephone service in worry that big companies would flock the market as well. One such company was Cellular communication which was still in its primary stages in 1982. TDS noted of its threat and planned to open up franchises for cellular communications, It was finally licensed, hence the rise of US, cellular corporation.
To help it grow, the company adopted a strategy to use exchanges and acquisitions with other companies to form geographical clusters. This helped to increase its client base mostly in Mid-Atlantic States, New England, North West, Midwest, and the south.
