History
Ticketmaster was founded in 1976 by a computer programmer called Peter Gadwa, a box office specialist called Albert Leffler alongside Gordon Gun III, Dan Reeter, Jerry Nelson, and Thomas Hart Jr.
Its first location was in Phoenix Arizona where it sold hardware and licensed computer programs for ticketing systems. In 1982, the co-founder of Hyatt hotel invested millions into the company after being convinced by Fred Rosen.
Ticketmaster was able to switch to computerized ticketing. The first concert that it sold tickets for was the Electric Light Orchestra which was held at the University of New Mexico. The company moved to Los Angeles and by 1985, it operated in the U.S., Europe and Canada.
Rosen led Ticketmaster into setting up a travel agency and venturing into publishing. In 1991, it acquired a rival company called Ticketron, making it the industry leader. Paul Allen, the Microsoft co-founder, would later acquire 80% stake in Ticketmaster in 1993.
Five years later, a majority stake in Ticketmaster was acquired by USA Networks Inc., a company that was later renamed to InterActiveCorp (IAC). Ticketmaster then merged with CitySearch in the same year to form Ticketmaster Online-CitySearch.
The new company bought TicketWeb Inc. in May, 2000. IAC then purchased the remaining stock in Ticketmaster in 2003. More acquisitions followed in the subsequent years with Ticketmaster acquiring Paciolan Inc., UK-based Getmein.com, and Front Line Management in 2008.
Ticketmaster merged with Live Nation in January 2010. The U.S. Justice Department oversaw the merger. The company was instructed to sell Paciolan to Comcast Spectacor or any other firm and have its software licensed by its biggest competitor Anschutz Entertainment Group (AEG).
More mergers followed in 2015 and the company acquired Front Gate Tickets and Universe. It also acquired Strobe Labs in 2017 and UPGRADED in 2018.
