History

TCF Bank was founded in 1923 in Minneapolis. It was initially known as Twin City Building and Loan Association. It was granted a federal charter in 1936 that saw it change its name to Twin City Federal Savings and Loan Associations.

The company later went public in 1986 under the new name TCF Banking and Savings, F.A. (TCF Bank). It reorganized a year later and became a holding company referred to as TCF Financial Corporation. The bank has mainly grown through expansion with a few acquisitions such as those of Standard Financial and Great Lakes Bancorp.

The first acquisition was in the 1990s which saw it expand into Michigan after acquiring Great Lakes National Bank and Federal Savings Bank of Oakland County. It acquired Winthrop Resources Corporation in 1997 and VGM Leasing, Inc. in 2004.

The bank created TCF Inventory Finance, Inc. which saw it enter the commercial inventory finance business both in America and Canada. It then ventured into indirect auto financing in 2011 after acquiring Gateway One Lending & Finance.

Chemical Bank of Detroit announced on January 28, 2019 that it was merging with TCF. The newly merged company would retain the TCF brand but change its headquarters to a tower that Chemical was constructing in Detroit.

When it comes to expansion, TCF started with about 110 branches in Minneapolis. It currently has campus branches that it put up in partnership with St. Cloud State University and University of Minnesota.

The bank currently runs 148 branches in Chicago metropolitan. It was, however, forced to close 37 in 2013 and 33 in 2016. Its acquisition of Great Lakes National Bank helped it to branch out into Michigan where it currently runs 38 branches.

In Colorado, the bank has 36 branches in Colorado Springs and Denver metro. It operates 7 branches in Arizona where it opened its first branch in 2006 in Mesa. All the 7 branches were to be sold to Alaska USA Federal Credit Union but the sale is still pending regulatory approval.
