T.G.I. Friday’s Hours

TGI Fridays is a US restaurant chain which concentrates on casual dining (formerly T.G.I FRIDAY’S and operates in the UK as FRIDAYS).

TriArtisan Capital, which acquired the company from Sentinel Partners in October 2019, is a private equity firm headquartered in NYC.

TGI Friday became so popular that rope lines had to be installed so that people who waited in line could limit the waiting area that was then often uncommon for a restaurant. Today, TGI Fridays have more than 870 restaurants (excluding the US) in around 60 countries.

Fridays have a big menu focusing on alcoholic drinks. TGI used to serve appetizers, desserts, and entrees accepted by Atkins. Atkins’s name was deleted from the menu in 2006, but both low carbohydrates and low-fat items are still on sale in the restaurant. Gluten-free products are available in the UK and the US.

History

In 1965, the first restaurant of the TGI was opened in New York by Alan Stillman. Having lived in a neighborhood of numerous airline bosses, models, secretaries, and others, he hoped to meet women with a bar on the East Side of Manhattan near the Queensboro Bridge.

At that time, Stillman’s option of socializing were non-public cocktail parties or bars for “guys’ beer-drinking hangout” that women did not usually go to. There was no public place for people between, say, twenty-three to thirty-seven years old, to meet.

Stillman bought a bar he visited a lot, The Nice Tavern at the corner of 63rd Street and First Avenue, and renamed it to TGI Fridays, meaning “Thank God it’s Friday!” to say this often during his years at Bucknell University.

He spent 5,000 dollars of his own money and 5,000 dollars borrowed from his mother. Although several TV ads for the cable have used “Thank Goodness It’s Friday” in 2010 as a substitute phrase.
