History
SunTrust Bank was formed in 1985 through a merger between Sun Bank and Trust Company of Georgia. The merged company was based in Atlanta and continued to run under the name Sun Bank in Florida and Trust Company Bank in Georgia.
The first major deal was struck about a year later when the merged company acquired Third National Corporation of Nashville. It continued to operate under the name Third National in Tennessee.
There were three names in operations back then in different locations. However, Sun Bank, Third National and Trust Company Bank were all retired and rebranded to SunTrust in 1995. SunTrust expanded in 1998 to the District of Columbia, Virginia and Maryland after purchasing Crestar Financial Corporation of Richmond, Virginia.
The company was included in the S&P Stock Price Index in 1988. In 2001, it created SunTrust Robinson-Humphrey after buying all institutional businesses owned by Robinson-Humphrey Company, LLC. This was after pursuing Robinson-Humphrey for more than 80 years with the desire to acquire it.
In 2004, SunTrust bought the National Commerce Financial Corporation (NCF) for $7 billion. It operated under the name National Bank of Commerce in Tennessee, Arkansas, Georgia, West Virginia, South Carolina, Mississippi, Alabama, and Virginia. It also operated as Central Carolina Bank and Trust in North Carolina.
In 2013, SunTrust led a group of banks that included Florida Community Bank and Fifth Third Bank in acquiring BEL USA, the parent company to DiscountMugs. The bank announced the launch of a specialty group in Medicine the next year that would be part of independent medical practices.
In early 2019, BB&T announced that it would purchase SunTrust. This would make it the sixth largest bank in America with a market capitalization of about $66 billion and assets worth $442 billion. The merger took place in December, 2019.
The newly merged company continues to operate under SunTrust and BB&T names until both systems are fully integrated. Once everything is settled, it will be based in Charlotte and will have a new name – Truist Financial Corporation.
