History

Subway traced its roots to 1965 when Fred DeLuca got a loan of $1,000 from Peter Buck. DeLuca used the money to start a sandwich shop called “Pete’s Super Submarines”. The shop had its first location in Bridgeport, Connecticut.

In 1966, DeLuca and Buck formed a holding company called Doctor’s Associates Inc. to help operate the restaurant as it expanded. The name of the company was derived from DeLuca’s dream of earning enough money from the shop to go to medical school. It was also partly influenced by Buick’s doctorate in physics.

Two years later, the two gentlemen renamed the shop to “Subway”. By 1978, they had expanded to the West Coast and opened their first shop in Fresno, California. After opening several North America locations, DeLuca and Buck opened their first branch outside North America in 1984.

The shop was located in Bahrain. Expansion continued into other areas such as Brighton, the United Kingdom, which saw its first location in 1996. Subway began locating its shops in Walmart supercenters in 2004. By 2007, its shop numbers had grown and surpassed those of McDonald’s.

Fred DeLuca died of Leukemia in 2015 after battling the condition for two years. He was succeeded by his sister Suzanne Greco who became president and CEO. In 2016, the company was forced to close down hundreds of restaurants in the United States citing net losses in several locations.

About 26,744 locations remained. By the end of 2017, it had closed about 800 locations in the U.S. This continued and 500 more restaurants were closed in April, 2018. The shutdowns were attributed to decreasing profits and foot traffic for three consecutive years.

Other reasons included deep promotions that franchisees were required to do and to change tastes and preferences for hormone-free meat on the part of the customer. Subway has continuously invested in re-branding campaigns to boost sales, revitalize its image, and target young customers better.
