What`s the history of this mall?
In 1958, the Stonewood Center was built in Downey, California. It was the first fully enclosed shopping mall in Southeast Los Angeles County, and it quickly became a popular destination for residents of the surrounding communities. The mall underwent a significant expansion in the 1970s, and it continued to be a successful shopping center for many years. However, in recent years the mall has struggled to attract shoppers and tenants, and its future is uncertain.
Stonewood is built on land leased by the Ball family, who formerly farmed oranges on the ground before the mall was constructed. The family still owns the property. The original idea was for five buildings with over 60 businesses and more than 335,000 square feet (31.1 km2) of total leased space.
In the 1960s, J.C. Penney, Montgomery Ward, and Woolworth’s stores were the original major department stores at Stonewood Center. A food court and several smaller shops were also added in the 1970s. Stonewood was sold to Hughes Investments in 1986, which spent $100 million on a renovation that opened the mall in 1990 and added over 40 new businesses, a May Company California department store anchor, and Acapulco and Olive Garden eateries.
The mall has been remodeled several times since its opening, most notably in the early 1990s when an outdoor pedestrian promenade was built to link the north and south parking areas.
