History

Steak ‘n Shake was founded by A. H. “Gus” Belt in Normal, Illinois in 1934. Belt had been in the United States Marine Corps for four years. He transformed his gas station and chicken restaurant into a hamburger stand.

He would grind the ingredients into a burger in front of his customers to assure them of the wholesomeness of the product. After the success of his restaurant, he acquired Goal Post and converted all its restaurants into Steak ‘n Shake restaurants.

Belt passed on in 1954 leaving his business in the hands of his wife Edith who operated ran it until 1969. The restaurant would later be passed on to many hands including Longchamps, Inc., and Franklin Corporation.

In 1981, E. W. Kelley and Associates bought Steak ‘n Shake together with its parent company Franklin corporation. E.W. “Ed” Kelley took over and ran it until his death in 2003.

The chain was bought by an entrepreneur called Sardar Biglari in 2008. It had been experiencing losses of up to $100,000 per day and declining sales for three years. Biglari concentrated on offering milkshakes, fires and burgers, and reduced the menu to a bi-fold.

This resulted in an increase in profits and same-store sales for 24 straight quarters. However, the chain still experienced new challenges. This was attributed to competition from restaurants like Chipotle, two lawsuits by former managers for not getting paid overtime, and underinvestment.

In 2018, Steak ‘n Shake decided to change to a franchise partner model. It attempted to sell more than 400 of its wholly owned restaurants to franchise operators. For just $10,000, the operators could take control of a Steak ‘n Shake establishment. They were required to turn over 50% of the profits to the parent company. The company, however, still remained in heavy debt.
