On April 17, 1968, Sonny’s Real Pit-Bar-B-Q was created, beginning with a one-stop Waldo Road in Gainesville, Florida by Floyd “Sonny” Tillman and his wife, Lucille.
In 1977, the company started franchising a pork menu, beef, chicken, bean, and other nine years later. In 1988, Sonny BBQ expanded to 77 restaurants in six nations, and Tillman sold it to foreign investors. Bob Yarmuth bought the company in 1991.
During the 2000s, Sonny’s was the United States’ biggest restaurant BBQ chain with some 150 restaurants in nine states. There were 125 franchised restaurants operating in 2011. In 2012 its headquarters relocated to Winter Park, Florida. In 2013, Sonny’s Real Pit-Bar-Q changed its name to Sonny’s BBQ.
The Greater Atlanta Bar-B-Q (only the franchisee from Metro Atlanta to Sonny’s) filed a banking defense for Chapter 11 at ten locations on September 25, 2008.
Four of them are closed and are worried about another restaurant’s profitability following the closure of Bennigan and Steak & Ale Restaurant Group’s Metromedia restaurant chain. However, Chapter 11 was concluded during the first week of June 2009 by bankruptcy.
All three Sonny sites in Florida’s more prominent Daytona Beach district were closed on October 15, 2008. On December 1, 2009, the restaurant Tifton, Georgia, had a dispute with Sonny over the imagery and icons in the restaurant and employees’ clothes and became known as Smokehouse Restaurants.

Every August 14, the restaurant celebrates the birthday of Sonny Tillman as a special event. Tillman maintained ownership of the original Sonny’s BBQ, despite selling his franchise, until 2011, after he gave up his franchise.
Then he continued to engage in large openings, often promotional activities, and other events. Sonny’s Spontaneous BBQ activities provide events that give neighborhood sponsors and volunteers a BBQ feast at individual restaurants. From October 12, 2016, the company has called it National Pulled Pork Day, which takes place in all Sonny locations.
