The story behind Six Flags amusement park

Angus G. Wynne and several other investors in 1957. The park was originally named “The Texas Giant” when it opened in 1961 but was renamed “Six Flags Over Texas” in 1972 to reflect the theme park’s six themed areas, which were inspired by various cultures that had settled in Texas.

The company was sold to Pennsylvania Railroad in 1966 and then to Bally Manufacturing in 1974. Six Flags began to expand rapidly in the late 1970s and early 1980s, opening new parks across the United States. The company went public in 1986, becoming a publicly-traded company on the New York Stock Exchange. In 1997, Six Flags was acquired by Time Warner and became a division of their Time Warner Entertainment Company unit.

During the 1990s the amusement park operations of Time Warner were merged with those of Premier Parks to form a new company, Six Flags Theme Parks Inc. which operated the combined parks. In 1999, Time Warner sold the bulk of its interest in Six Flags Theme Parks to a consortium led by Dan Snyder’s Red Zone LLC for $1.8 billion. In 2007, the company was acquired by investment firm The Blackstone Group in a take-private transaction and became a privately-held company.

The company later divested itself of its European parks division in 1999. On July 8, 2009, the CEO of Six Flags announced that the company had filed for bankruptcy protection due to the failure of several debt-restructuring plans. The bankruptcy filing resulted in the ownership stake of Time Warner being reduced from 96% to 22%.

In 2010,Six Flags was acquired by PNC Financial Services, which took on the company’s debt. Six Flags exited bankruptcy on May 3, 2010, and today operates 18 parks across the United States, Mexico, and Canada. The company also licenses its brand name to various entertainment venues such as water parks, theme parks, and festivals.

In 2010, Six Flags sold off its water parks division to CNL Lifestyle Properties, and on April 1, 2015, the company announced that it had filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in order to restructure its debt obligations in order to be able to continue operations. The company emerged from bankruptcy on May 3, 2017.

On October 22, 2018, Six Flags completed the sale of 51% stake in the company too Kirkland Lake Gold Ltd., a Canadian gold mining company, for $525 million. As part of the deal, Kirkland Lake Gold will invest an additional $275 million to fund Six Flags’ growth initiatives.

In March 2019, Six Flags announced that it had entered into an agreement to merge with Cedar Fair Entertainment Company, a publicly-traded operator of amusement and water parks, in an all-stock transaction valued at approximately $4 billion. The merger was completed on April 8, 2021.
