History

Shopko was founded by James Ruben in 1962. It was formerly known as ShopKo Corporation and had its first store in Green Bay, Wisconsin. It was one of the first chains to provide pharmacy, eye care and other related services within its stores.

The second store was opened on Main Street on the east side of Green Bay in 1966. It was referred to as ShopKo East. This was followed by more locations in the same state. Shopko then expanded to Michigan in 1969.

Ruben announced that the company’s headquarters would move to Ashland Avenue in June 1970. ShopKo Corp. was also renamed to ShopKo Stores, Inc. in the same month. Plans were announced in 1971 to merge with Minneapolis-based SuperValu.

Ruben left ShopKo in 1972 and became the president of SuperValu. He was succeeded by William Tyrrell. In 1977, ShopKo topped sales worth $100 million. The 1980s saw the company expand to Utah.

By 1988, it had 87 stores that made it hit $1 billion in sales. The company introduced a hypermarket concept called Twin Valu in 1989. It combined the grocery selection of Cub Foods and ShopKo’s general merchandise.

By 1990, the retail store had 100 branches across the U.S. It announced plans to merge with Ohio-based chain called Phar-Mor in 1996, but the plans were called off. A year later, ShopKo acquired Penn-Daniels Inc.

It also bought out SuperValu’s stock and banned tobacco products in its stores in the same year. Under the leadership of William Podany, the store acquired 147 locations owned by Pamida in 1999.

Podany resigned in April 2002 and was replaced by Jeffrey Girard as the interim CEO. Sam Duncan officially took over in October. ShopKo was bought by Sun Capital Partners in 2005. Pamida spun off in 2007 and became independent.

Due to tough competition and financial troubles, ShopKo was forced to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in January 2019. This saw the closure of multiple stores. The company’s optical operations were bought by Monarch Alternative Capital LP in April 2019.
