The history of the company`s foundation
Henry Sherwin and Edward Williams founded Sherwin-Williams in 1866. The company started as a partnership with one store in Cleveland, Ohio. The goal was to produce paints that were of better quality than what was currently available on the market. After 1870 In 1876, the owner formed Sherwin, Williams, and Company with Edward Williams and A.T. Osborn to operate a “house furnishing business”.
On July 16, 1884, twenty-two years after Osborn sold his partnership in the firm while retaining the retail operations, the Sherwin-Williams Paint Company was founded in Ohio. Osborn retired from the firm in 1886.
The company became successful and by 1890 had factories making its products in Chicago, Illinois; Newark, New Jersey; and Brooklyn, New York. The first European branch was opened in London in 1892, followed by Paris in 1893 and Berlin in 1898.
