History
Sheetz, Inc. was established in 1952 by G. Robert “Bob” Sheetz who purchased one of the five dairy stores that his father owned in Altoona. He recruited Steve, his brother, in 1961 to work for him part-time. They opened their second and third stores in 1963 and 1968 respectively.
The brothers had a goal of growing the business at the rate of one store every year with the target being to own seven stores. By 1972, Sheetz had fourteen stores across America. It was not until 1973 that the two brothers started selling gasoline. By 1983, they had 100 outlets.
The company has grown tremendously since then. It is currently the dominant chain of convenience stores in Pennsylvania where it boats of a virtual monopoly in Altoona. It also holds a large share in Pittsburgh where it competes with other American stores. To this day, the business is fully family-owned and always comprises of four Sheetz family members sitting in the Executive Committee.
