History
Save A Lot was founded in 1977 by Bill Moran. Moran worked at a grocery wholesale business in the 70s. He realized there was an opportunity for small grocers and decided to go head-to-head with the emerging mega-stores.
He created his first Save-A-Lot store in Cahokia, Illinois in 1977. His hard discount business model became successful almost immediately. In the same year, General Grover Co. took up his idea and opened 5 more stores in St. Louis, Missouri.
Within a year, Save-A-Lot was able to open stores in 29 more locations. Its success was highly attributed to advertisements through word-of-mouth. By 1980, it had 52 more locations and an added warehouse in Jackson, Tennessee.
The store was able to reach several shoppers in multiple states. Its rank grew to match that of regional and national grocery stores in America. General Grocer decided to sell Save A Lot in 1983 exclusively to Moran.
The store was acquired five years later by Wetterau Incorporated. Wetterau was a Missouri-based food retailer and wholesaler. The acquisition saw Save-A-Lot expand in the subsequent years. The company also acquired 76 Jewel T stores, another grocery store chain that offered items at a discount. Save-A-Lot also added two warehouses, one in Florida and another in Pennsylvania.
Wetterau was acquired by Supervalu Inc. in 1993 and with it came Save A Lot. Bill Moran retired in 2006 after serving at Save A Lot for 30 years. The store has maintained its values and vision since then and continues to offer quality low-priced products needed by shoppers every day. It is currently one of the largest grocery chains in the US.
