The story of Rouses grocery store
In 1923 Anthony Rouses opened Rouses Market in the French Quarter of New Orleans. He was a young Sicilian immigrant who started with only five dollars and sold fish that he caught himself.
The store developed into a grocery market, then to groceries online, where customers could purchase meats, produce, seafood, pasta, cheeses, and sauces for delivery or ready pickup at their local Rouses location.
In the 1970s Ciro Rouses Jr., the founder’s son took over Rouses Market. He was just as passionate about serving customers fresh food at fair prices as his father was.
Ciro added even more items to the variety of food that they offered their customers. They introduced party platters, custom-prepared foods, and holiday hampers, which were sold for Thanksgiving, Christmas, weddings or other special occasions.
Ciro also brought in new ideas to strengthen the company’s infrastructure so that it could adapt quickly to change and still remain flexible enough to support future plans. With this vision, he paved the way for Rouses’ expansion into Louisiana cities such as Lafayette, Baton Rouge New Iberia, Houma Town & Country. Then in 1985, he made a move to enter the grocery business in Mississippi by establishing a store in Hattiesburg.
In 1990, Ciro Rouses Sr., who was from Sicily, joined his son in running the family business. He is the third generation of Rouses to contribute to this successful business and he still remains involved with Rouses Market. In 2000, Anthony’s great-granddaughter Alexandra (Ali) went to work for her father at Rouses Market Iberia; she got married and moved away but has since returned and works there today!
Rouses never listed its corporate name on storefronts or any company literature because Anthony believed his customers came first. Unfortunately, Anthony passed away in 1995 due to aggressive pancreatic cancer before being able to see his dream of 12 stores come true.
Upon his death, Ciro and his father’s legacy were carried on by six of Anthony’s children: Vincent, Frank, Leonard, Margaret Ellen (Honey), Rita, and Marie.
Rouses has more than 100 employees who work in the corporate office and the stores. Many of them have worked for Rouses for many years, just like family members.
In 2008, Rouses was named “Service Supermarket of the Year” by their peers in the Louisiana supermarket industry because they make every effort possible to always put their customers first.
