Rose’s Stores, Inc. was established by Paul Howard Rose in North Carolina in the year 1915. Howard had just purchased the Henderson Store which operated in Charlotte and Henderson. He started by branching out into Oxford in 1916 before opening branches in Roxboro in 1917 and Louisburg and Rosemary in 1918.

The five stores performed well and in 1920, Rose and his family members decided to expand further. They set up shop in South Carolina and Virginia. They later went north into Lenoir and Statesville in North Carolina.

By the time it was incorporated in 1927, Rose’s Stores had 30 shops. Expansion continued and in 1929, the company expanded to Tennessee and Georgia. Most of these locations were small towns. It was not until 1938 that the company started opening stores in Hampton Roads, Virginia. This would soon be its largest urban market.

By 1938, Rose’s had 105 stores. The chain opened its 106th and 107th stores in Ocean View Norfolk and Downtown Virginia Beach respectively. By the start of World War II, there were about 118 stores across different locations.

Roses started to increase the sizes of their stores. In 1961, it put up a 50,000-sq-ft. building in Spartanburg’s Pinewood Plaza. The store was advertised as a “discount department store”. Similar spaces were opened in Louisville, Virginia Beach, Greensboro, and Roanoke.

By the 1990s, the company had replaced most of its smaller stores with large shopping center locations. The new larger spaces replaced lunch counters with cafeterias. Roses underwent a Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 1993. It emerged from it in May 1995.

The company was bought by Variety Wholesalers in 1997. There were about 106 stores in operations back then. The new owner was able to bring Roses back to profitability and even renamed Rose’s Stores, Inc. to Variety Stores. The stores have, however, continued to run under the Roses Stores name.
