History

Redbox Automated Retail LLC was established by the Corporation business development team at McDonald’s. Kiosks originally operated under the name Ticktok Easy Shop and sold convenience store products until 2003.

Gregg Kaplan took up the kiosks in 2004 and decided to rent out DVDs. Unlike other similar businesses, McDonald’s offered a return policy that allowed customers to return rented DVDs to any kiosk. In 2005, McDonald’s sold Redbox to Coinstar in 2005 for $32 million. In 2009, Coinstar bought the remaining part for between $169 and $176 million.

Redbox then moved to retail locations and placed kiosks within and outside supermarkets. By 2007, it had surpassed Blockbuster in its number of locations. It passed 1 billion rentals in 2010. The company’s current competitors include Blockbuster, Netflix, Hollywood Video, Family Video, West Coast Video, and Movie Gallery.

In 2003, Mitch Lowe joined Redbox, and became the Chief Operating Officer in 2005. Lowe had prior experience with the business as he operated Video Droid, a video rental company that ran from 1982 to 1997. Lowe became president at Redbox in 2009.

The same year, 20th Century Fox, Universal Studios and Warner Bros decided to only sell DVDs to Redbox 28 days after their arrival in stores. The three companies were concerned that the growth of DVD kiosks would jeopardize their incomes. Redbox filed lawsuits against the companies. An agreement was entered on April 22, 2010 in which Redbox agreed to provide rental films from the studios 28 days after their first home-video releases.

In July of the same year, Redbox started renting out Blu-ray movies from 13,000 of its kiosks nationwide. The company started testing video game rentals in Nevada, Florida, Wisconsin, Texas, North Carolina, and Oregon in October. Video games from all major platforms were available countrywide in June 2011. This was, however, halted in 2019.

But Redbox ultimately found itself on the wrong side of video history as consumers moved away from physical media. Which is better Redbox or Netflix?

Netflix has way more titles than Redbox. It’s said they have more than 100,000 titles on DVD and Blu-ray, so you can easily rent that hard-to-find movie you’d like to see again. Plus they have TV shows in their title library, which is something Redbox doesn’t have.

    How does Redbox make money?

The company gets revenue from the fees charged to rent or purchase a movie, including the roughly $2 a night that customers are charged to rent, plus late fees if they don’t return it by 9 pm the next day.

Why is Redbox streaming more expensive?

They have servers to host the content, digital media licensing fees, the cost of upstream bandwidth necessary to stream video, etc. Those costs could actually be greater than the costs that Redbox faces for maintaining its kiosks.

Is Redbox and Netflix owned by the same company?
