History

RadioShack was founded by Milton and Theodore Deutschmann in 1921. The two brothers wanted to provide different types of equipment for the nascent amateur radio that existed then. They opened a mail-order retail store at 46 Brattle Street in downtown Boston.

The brand name “Radio Shack” was coined by Bill Halligan, an employee who later went to form Hallicrafters. The term referred to a small wooden structure that was used to house radio equipment on a ship. Milton and Theodore thought it was brilliant for a business that supplied hams and radio officers with equipment.

RadioShack’s first catalog was issued in 1939. This was followed by an entry into the music market. By 1954, the two brothers were selling private-label products under the “Realist” brand name. The name was later changed to Realistic after the company was sued by Stereo Realist.

Most of the products Radio Shack sold in Boston were sourced from Japan. Customers commonly referred to them as “Nagasaki Hardware”, a term that perceived them as inexpensive and low-quality. The company was later purchased by Charles D. Tandy after going bankrupt in the 1960s.
