RadioShack was founded by Milton and Theodore Deutschmann in 1921. The two brothers wanted to provide different types of equipment for the nascent amateur radio that existed then. They opened a mail-order retail store at 46 Brattle Street in downtown Boston.

The brand name “Radio Shack” was coined by Bill Halligan, an employee who later went to form Hallicrafters. The term referred to a small wooden structure that was used to house radio equipment on a ship. Milton and Theodore thought it was brilliant for a business that supplied hams and radio officers with equipment.

RadioShack’s first catalog was issued in 1939. This was followed by an entry into the music market. By 1954, the two brothers were selling private-label products under the “Realist” brand name. The name was later changed to Realistic after the company was sued by Stereo Realist.

Most of the products Radio Shack sold in Boston were sourced from Japan. Customers commonly referred to them as “Nagasaki Hardware”, a term that perceived them as inexpensive and low-quality. The company was later purchased by Charles D. Tandy after going bankrupt in the 1960s.

Business Directions

In addition to providing electronic parts, wireless communications, digital technology parts, batteries, and accessories; RadioShack had also started offering branded no-contract wireless services in partnership with Cricket Wireless. The services were based on Sprint’s and Cricket’s nationwide networks.

The service was brought to a halt in 2014. However, those that had already bought it from RadioShack are still able to enjoy the service through Cricket Wireless. Having faced stiff competition from other retailers like Amazon and Best Buy, RadioShack now primarily focuses on its e-commerce platform that boasts of over 500 dealer locations. It still sells batteries, consumer electronics, radios, as well as electronic accessories and parts.

Key Facts

Between the 1960s and early 1990s, RadioShack offered a free cardboard card that came in the size of a wallet. It had one free Enercell for one month in-store. This brought in a lot of foot traffic and as the card also served as a general business card for salespersons.

The longest-selling product by Radio Shack was its Realistic Flavoradio that was sold between 1972 and 1986. It was first available in six colors that later grew to eleven. The company has also participated in corporate citizenship where it supported the National Center for Mission & Exploited Children in 2006. Its green initiative allows rechargeable wireless phones and batteries to be dropped off at its stores. These are then safely recycled.

In 2018, Radio Shack made a comeback into the electronics industry. Products now range from computers and networking to vehicle electronics. If you need a drone or expert advice and hands-on experience, RadioShack has it.
