History

RaceTrac was founded in 1934 by Carl Bolch Sr. He operated his first stores under the name Carl Bolch Trackside Stations in St. Louis, Missouri. Twenty-five years later, Bolch bought the Oil Well Company and relocated.

The company had several independent outlets spread out in Alabama. Bolch’s son joined the company in 1967 and became the new chief executive. He led the pioneering concept of self-service gasoline stations in Florida, Georgia, and Alabama.

The company also relocated to Atlanta, Georgia in 1967. The new location became its headquarters from where it changed its brand name to “RaceTrac”. The name was used in all company-operation stations.

In the 1990s, RaceTrac did business on a cash-only basis. It later changed this and now accepts debit cards, fleet cards, and credit cards. Carl Bolch Jr. announced in October 2012 that he would be succeeded by his daughter Allison Bolch Moran as the CEO. The change took place in December of the same year and Carl remained chairman of the Board.

Unlike other gas stations and convenience stores in America, RaceTrac prefers growing from the ground up by building its own stores rather than undertaking acquisitions. In the last 16 years, it has only acquired one store.

Its RaceWay division is operated by independent contractors. The company has been increasing the number of RaceWay locations across the United States in recent years.

It has also consolidated all stores operating in four main markets – Atlanta, Florida, Louisiana and Dallas. In 2013, it went into partnership with Fifth Third Bancorp to have ATMs installed in 225 of its convenience stores in Florida and Georgia.
