The history of the Piggly Wiggly chain
In 1916 Clarence Saunders , the founder of Piggly Wiggly, came up with the self-service grocery store. Before this, customers would give their orders to a clerk who would then get the items for them.
Saunders’ new idea was to have a grocery store where the customers would walk down an aisle and pick out what they wanted themselves. This allowed for lower prices because it eliminated the need for someone to pay wages for standing behind the counter.
The first Piggly Wiggly opened in Memphis, Tennessee in 1916. Saunders originally named his store ‘Porgy and Bess’, but later changed it to ‘Piggly Wiggly’ after hearing a little girl say the name. Saunders was not content with just one store and by 1922 there were over 600 Piggly Wigglys across the United States.
In 1935 Canadian Piggly Wiggly stores were opened in Ontario. The first store was in Kitchener and was owned by Harry Atkinson. Atkinson had previously been a salesman for Piggly Wiggly in the United States.
Piggly Wiggly Canada expanded rapidly throughout the province of Ontario during the late 1930s and early 1940s. By 1946 there were over 70 stores. Most of these stores were located in small towns, but there were also some in larger cities such as Hamilton and Toronto.
After 1953, Piggly Wiggly Canada entered into a period of decline. This was due, in part, to the increasing popularity of supermarkets. Piggly Wiggly Canada ceased operations in 1989. This was a little over a year after the last American Piggly Wiggly closed its doors.
In 2013, Piggly Wiggly was brought back to Canada. The new chain is owned by Mike Weinberg, the founder of FreshCo. There are currently six stores in operation, all located in the Toronto area.
The history of Piggly Wiggly is a testament to the innovation and creativity of Clarence Saunders. Saunders was a true pioneer in the grocery industry and his legacy continues to this day.
