The history of the company
The four founding “Pep Boys” were Manny Rosenfeld, Maurice Strauss, Graham “Jack” Jackson, and Moe Radavitz, four pals who met in August 1921. The business’ name was formed in parts. “The Pep Boys” originated from a police officer who worked near the store.
During nighttime hours, when the officer stopped a car for driving without lights, he would tell the driver, “Go see the boys at Pep” for a new oil wick, which was what they used as automobile headlights before switching to electrical headlamps. With such a title their automotive aftermarket service was quickly-remembered and became successful. The company became a household name in the Philadelphia area, and in the 1930s began expanding outside Pennsylvania.
When the Great Depression began in 1929, however, Manny and Moe had only modest commercial obligations such as reasonable mortgages on store properties. Pep Boys was thus protected from the severe recession that ruined so many other firms. Although unemployment rates reached 40% in certain regions, Manny and Moe did not lay off employees or reduce salaries during the Depression.
After these hard times, the company enjoyed a period of prosperity during which several key decisions were made. Manny’s brother, Murray Rosenfeld, opened the first West Coast Pep Boys store in 1933 as part of a different company. The Pep Boys – Manny, Moe & Jack of California operated the Western stores. In three years, Pep Boys of California had opened 11 stores.
During the 1980s, Pep Boys experienced aggressive growth. They moved to the New York Stock Exchange and rapidly expanded with the introduction of “supercenter” stores. The store count grew to over 7009 and they had more than 3000 service bays. They generated annual sales of over $2 billion dollars.
Their service chain expanded to Puerto Rico after the 1990s. It was one of the first American franchises to reach the island. The company opened several stores and service bays on the island.
At the beginning of the 2000s, the company started to work even harder. The founders of Pep Boys decided that they wanted to take their company public. They filed for an initial public offering in October of 2005.
In October 2009, Pep Boys purchased a tire retailer called Florida Tire. This gave Pep Boys ten service and tire centers in the Orlando market. And already in March 2011, Pep Boys acquired seven stores from another tire retailer called Big O Tires. This gave Pep Boys service and tire centers in Washington state. Another great purchase was in January 2017, Pep Boys acquired Just Brakes, a 134-locations automotive repair, and maintenance business previously owned by Advance Auto Parts.
In April 2019, Pep Boys announced a new fleet-specific Pep Boys Mobile Crew vehicles as part of a larger shift to provide on-site maintenance and repair. The addition of smaller-format van services to the Pep Boys Mobile Crew’s repair inventory and trained experts to do standard fleet maintenance and repair tasks on-site is a significant development.
