History
Peeble’s first store in Lawrenceville, VA, was founded in 1891 by WilliamSmith Peebles.
In 1986, the family sold the business to 2 investment banking companies and Peebles’ senior management for $85 million. Sold twice before the purchase in South Hill, VA, of Stage Stores in 2003, Peebles had more than 125 stores, mostly in the mid-Atlantic, southeast, and mid-west countries.
The shops were sold in 2003. Peebles purchased the upscale Harveys Department Stores chain in Nashville following decades of growth in September 1988, renaming the stores Peebles.
Peebles acquired the same chain in 1998. All of Watson’s shops were known to Peebles.
In August 2019, it was revealed that all of the Peebles shops, along with all other stores run by Stage Stores, Inc, are to be turned into Gordmans shops. Houston-based Stage Stores bought 167 million dollars in cash and 46.9 million dollars in debts in 2003.
