Sam Meineke founded Meineke in 1971 in Houston, Texas. In 1972, with Harold Nedell, he began to franchise his name. Meineke Discount Mufflers was purchased in 1983 by the international British corporation GKN. The headquarters of the organization moved to North Caroline, Charlotte, in 1986.

Meineke Discount Muffler Stores, Inc. was turned into a privately owned and no longer publicly held business in 2003, the same year.
