History of Meijer

Meijer was founded in 1934 by a Dutch immigrant called Hendrik Meijer. He was a barber who worked in Greenville, Michigan. He decided to venture into groceries during the Great Depression. After his Greenville store became successful, he opened additional groceries in Cedar Springs and Ionia. The company had more than two dozen stores in West Michigan by the 1960s.

In 1962, Meijer opened a modern 180,000 sq. ft. store along 28th Street. It combined departmental and grocery shopping all in one building. The store had floors that were six inches thick. The idea was to convert them into a car dealership if the concept failed. New stores were built like this until the 1970s after which the extra management costs became a concern. More stores were then launched in Norton Shores, Alpine Avenue, Portage, Delta Charter and Ypsilanti in Michigan. By 1977, Meijer had 33 stores.

Fred Meijer took over Meijer in 1964 after his father’s death. He continued to steer the company to success all the way to the early 1990s. Forbes Magazine credited the success of Meijer to it’s ability to understand the food business. Walmart and other rivaling stores were failing at it because they did not take into consideration the importance of quality produce.

In 2003, the company made changes to its image and logo. This was done to make Meijer stores seem inviting and friendly. The move was followed by expansion into other locations in 2005. Frederik Meijer died on November 25, 2011 at the age of 91. Two years. later the company opened a supercenter in Swartz Creek, Michigan which brought its total number of stores to 200. It is currently co-chaired by Hendrik’s grandsons, brothers Doug and Hank Meijer.
