History

Maverik was started by Ruel Call in 1928. Call had just made some money from renting roller skates. He used it to buy two barrels of fuel which he strapped to the back of his pickup truck and headed to Afton, Wyoming.

He started a 2-pump gas station which he operated in the small town of Afton. After six months of low sales, Call decided to sell fuel to area residents and ranches. The business grew quickly and in 1954, he decided to de-affiliate from his national brand. He became independent and named his business “Maverik” which means unbranded.

Maverik first dropped its western country-like store theme in 1999. Since the independent fuel operator was the largest in the intermountain west, Call adopted the tag line “Adventure’s First Stop” to represent the energetic outdoor activities that are popular in the west.

New stores currently feature snowboarders coming out of walls and kayakers emerging from fountain falls. This is done to encourage consumers to get into the outdoors and play. Maverik prides itself in its core leadership standards that govern its operations.

These standards include treating others better than they expect to be treated, empowering and supporting team members so as to make Maverik one of the best places to work at, and solving customers’ problems so that the store can maintain great operations.
