History

In 1855, Hussey Macy opened four retail stores offering dry foods in Massachusetts but failed. This downfall became a stepping stone for him since it allowed him to learn from the mistakes he made and build a stronger and better brand. He moved to New York where he opened “R. H. Macy & Co” in 1958 and this became an instant success starting from the first day. As they continued to grow, they opened other stores in other areas and used good publicity stunts such as illuminates windows to become more popular.

By 1875, the initial owner acquired new partners who were both family members but unfortunately, they all died within two years of each other. Macy passed away in 1877 followed by La Forge in 1878 and Valentine in 1879. Despite this, the company ownership was maintained within the family until 1895 when it was acquired by new owners. The new ownership didn’t deter the company’s success as they continued to obtain more stores and expand its operations.

Despite the changes in ownership and leadership over the years, Macy’s has maintained their company name as well as their logo. They have become better at providing satisfactory customer services and their diversity have increased convenience for many customers who are now able to find a variety of products from Macy’s.
