History

The first Long John Silver’s restaurant was opened in Lexington, Kentucky in August, 1969. The original location had a seafood restaurant called Cape Codder. The building was redesigned by Druce Henn, an architect who came up with Long John Silver’s New England style in its early chain of restaurants.

Earlier branches were popular for their blue roofs, square cupolas, lobster pots, ship’s wheels, wood tables and benches, and Cape Cod style. Nautical decorations were adopted later for the seats and other parts of the restaurant.

Early Long John Silver’s restaurants also featured wrought iron handles that resembled swords, separate entrance and exit doors, transparent food heaters that allowed customers to see the food as they waited to be served, and a waiting line area that resembled a corridor.

Newer restaurants retained the structural design but did away with most of the interior themes. Long John Silver’s was initially run by its parent company called Jerrico Inc., which became private in 1989.

Jerrico Inc., struggled in subsequent years to stay afloat due to heavy debts. In June, 1998, it filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. A&W decided to acquire the company in 1999, resulting in the formation of Yorkshire Global Restaurants.

Yorkshire Global Restaurants became the parent company to A&W and Long John Silver’s. It was bought by Tricon Global in 2002 and renamed to Yum! Brands, Inc. In 2011, Yum! announced that it was in search of a buyer for both A&W and Long John Silver’s restaurant divisions. This was due to poor sales.

In September of the same year, the company announced that it was selling Long John Silver’s to a group of private investors and franchisees called LJS Partners. In 2015, James O’Reilly became the CEO of Long John Silver’s. He expected the chain to retain its 1,132 stores and refocus its efforts in reclaiming its name from the negative press it had received due to the fat content found in its food.

In May 2018, Long John Silver’s announced that it had acquired 76 franchised restaurants owned by ServUS.
