The company of LA Fitness was founded by Chin Yi, CEO, and chairman along with Louis Welch, the CEO, and president in the year 1984. Their first location was in a corner of Arrow Highway and Hollenbeck Avenue in a place known as Covina, located in the suburbs of Los Angeles, California. There are few records which describe the history and growth of the company but it is believed to grow through the mid-1990s. It acquired the fitness clubs which under-performed in Southern California as well as operated the properties which were newly constructed. This is how the company expanded.

In the year 2007, it acquired 6 clubs in Toronto which is in Ontario, Canada. This was the company’s first time that it opened fitness clubs outside the States. Next, in 2010 the company took over 10 locations in the city of Phoenix, Arizona.

It then successfully went on acquiring over 30 lifestyle, family and fitness clubs in Florida by July 2nd, 2012.

On 23rd December 2013, it acquired the famous athletic clubs Buffalo and Rochester in western New York. On 30th December 2013, the company announced that it acquired 10 sports and fitness clubs named Vision Quest in the area of greater Seattle.
